This place is incredible! The baconnator pizza is the best pizza I have ever had in my entire life. I highly recommend it. The unique pizzas and sandwiches served here are worth the wait. Plus, the wings are perfect. The saying,"good food isn't fast and fast food isn't good" applies to Anthracite perfect. Go try it, just not on a Friday night when I'm trying to take my girlfriend there. Lol

My boyfriend and I came here for dinner and ended up leaving very disappointed. We sat at the bar, and before I even took my coat off the man behind the bar asked us what we would like to drink. Since I could not see what was on tap ( we were at the other end of the bar) I asked for a beer menu. My boyfriend got his beer and I was never asked what I would like to order. The bartender chatted non stop with two other employees at the other end of the bar for at least 15 minutes. By this time my boyfriend finished his beer and I was really put off by the poor service. We originally came for a burger, but I was thankful we did not eat here as the menu was pathetic and I did not want to choose between a ' garbage' burger or 'heart attack' burger. The menu was over priced and looked like it was a step up from what a school cafeteria would serve. We left since we were unable to get service at the empty bar and went to the diner down the street. I have since told all of my friends to not waste their time going to this dump.

I've heard complaints about this place, and every time I wonder if people are talking about the same place? I've had nothing but good food and good experiences during my MANY visits to Anthracite. The beer selection is minimal (on tap anyway) but they make up for that with a lean towards local and craft brews. The food is the real gem here. It's all locally sourced, and the recipes are obviously original and delicious. The burgers are to die for. In fact, they might actually kill you. The wings are awesome, and the sauces leave you scratching your head with decision paralysis. I mean, peanut butter and jelly?!? It's a small bar/restaurant, and they do their very best to accomodate you, even if it's a little slower on busy nights.

Aside from the instant mashed potatoes, the chunks of lettuce cores in the salad. What really turned me off was the chunk of stuck together uncooked pasta and acidy sauce on the chicken parm. The most surprising was the extremely chipped plate my dinner was served on there were 3 LARGE chips in my plate. Buffalo stuffed chicken was good but not good enough to ever return from the other issues.

Recently expanded the bar and added more tables. Went on a Wednesday night. Seafood night! $1.00 jumbo peel and eat shrimp. Wings are good. I would say there's approximately 40 to 50 different wing sauces to pick from. Next time I'll count them and update my review. Excellent menu, good beer on draft and bottles. Catering available.

Good food. Ordered Mac & Cheese with Old Bay Shrimp. One thing I didn't care for was the service. Extremely slow.

What a great place and great food. Been there several times and food has always been excellent. Tuesday is 2 for 22.00 how can you go wrong and Wednesday is All U Can eat snow crab claws......yummy. Great prices and great service. A definite winner.

WINGS. WINGS. WINGS. That is all you need to know and order. But if you don't want wings then get anything else because it is absolutely great. But get the wings!! The varieties are ridiculously great!

Very good food and reasonable prices. This was my first time here and I will definitely be back again.

Great dive diner feel. If you can get by the exterior and run-down neighborhood, you'll be pleasantly surprised

Adage to live by "if the parking lot is full, then it's gotta be good. The lot was packed, and this place is better than good. It's not far off of I-81 so we'll definitely be stopping here on our way through again. Great beer selections, great food, and friendly staff. Do not judge this book by its cover.

Some of the best wings in the valley, so many sauces and dry rubs to choose from! Portions are huge, and they use fresh ingredients. Friendly knowledgeable staff who will always offer a bit of help when trying to decide between a few items!

Don't let the appearance fool you, this is a true gem of Wilkes-Barre. As an out of towner, I make it a point to visit this place every time I swing through for business. Why? Good food, great beer selection, a and fantastic crew. Need I say more? Ok, for some I do, so I shall go on... The food at AC falls into your "pub fare" category but they have their own twists on your usual suspects. Their burgers (called Holy Cows) have toppings ranging from chicken tenders and fried eggs to the normal bacon and cheese. They even have one sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches (The Heartattack). Their wings have 30+ flavors including a PB&J and the ghost chili enhanced "OUCH!". Looking for something requiring a fork? Check into their dinner entrees or one of their slightly different mac 'n' cheese plates or pop by on a Tuesday or Wednesday for one of their entree specials like the 8oz lobster special on Wednesday. Whatever you decide, the prices for the items are extremely reasonable with good sized (read as "large") portions. What about washing down that tasty grub? While the WB isn't exactly known for being a brew Mecca by any measure, AC is approaching epic levels for what they carry outside of your standard domestics. They have bottle and draft offerings in every area of the beer "spectrum" from all over the US and some international offerings as well. I will caution that they do not have a wine offering here but if you're good with delicious suds or a solid mixed drink you will have no problem getting taken care of. Speaking of being taken care of, the serving and tending team here is excellent. I've had most of my meals at the bar with the ever knowledgeable Dave helping me pick my poison but the floor staff is equally as good with answering questions or making recommendations on food and drink. They keep the place clean and humming along while ensuring you get your food hot and the way you want it. If you find yourself in the Wilkes-Barre, take a step away from the normal chains and hit up this place. It will be worth listening to your mother and not judging a book by its cover.

food was barely decent. the waitress lauren is either a really bad waitress, or she is racist. she didnt explain specials, made us wait forever, didnt ask if everything was ok, didnt offer to split the check, etc etc. will never return to this dump.

I think the good here is amazing. My boyfriend and I never miss a Thursday night Wing night. Their sauces are amazing and we are never disappointed. It gets crowded but for wings like that no wonder. Tuesday night is slow and they run a really good food special for two that is a steal. We highly recommend this place!

Burgers and beer and some of the best around this area. This place is always busy so call ahead and put your name in. Wings were great, burgers even better. Service is rough around the edges, not sure if that makes it even better or not?

This place rules! There was no wait on the Saturday evening we visited. Service ruled! Boyfriend liked his beers and dinner. I loved my stuffed rigatoni with vodka sauce so much! I only have one gripe - for $11.99, you did not get a lot of rigatoni. It is still a wonderful place, and I want to return!

They ran out of beef at 7pm when they open at 4pm? Well, I am not one of those whining types. But the service I have to say is sketchy. Hostess came after 5 minutes waiting when I was there alone. The waitress appeared after 15 minutes. I kept track because I was hungry and was not impressed by the hospitality. Then the waitress had no smile or refused to give suggestions on the menu when they said they ran out of beef! Ridiculous. I had read good reviews in Yelp and that's why I went. I trust yelp but looks like this is all I'd get in this weird town of Wilkes-Barre. Or may be I got too picky after going to the restaurants in Chicago and got used to southern hospitality in Tallahassee. By the way, I am not white but was dressed in a suit as I was coming back from work. So can't say anyone was judging. Haha Wings were pretty decent. Not sure of the hype though. I will still pay another visit to make sure all I said above still holds true. Will update this post then. Till then...

This a great local restaurant and bar, not far from all the big chains up the street. I always prefer to seek out local establishments whenever possible. This place is a perfect reason why I choose to do that. The staff is friendly and personable. The food is very reasonably priced, big portions and no doubt made fresh daily on premises. In addition, they have a great beer selection which can sometimes be tough to find in local places. They run different specials during the weeknights , which I've tried all. Tuesday is 2 for $20. UNBELIEVABLE, two entrees, two sides, two salads AND an appetizer! Are you kidding me? Wednesday is seafood night. How can you go wrong with all-u-can eat snow crabs for $20? They also have 1/2 pound lobster tail with sides for $14. Thursday night is wing night. They have like 40 sauces and rubs, but it can be a long wait, so we try and go early. My wife and I have been going here for the last several years and have always been extremely happy. So happy in fact that we hired them cater my daughter's graduation party last month. We received so many compliments on the food! We must've given out there number to 20 people. When you're hosting 100+ people at your home the last thing you need to worry about is the food. They came through with flying colors! A definite recommend.

The anthracite is a cozy, casual, welcoming place. They have a bunch of unique wing sauces to try. The hot is decent, but a little sweet. My favorite is the rosemary ranch. However, some of their sauce combos combine a dry rub with a sauce (like the Cajun butter garlic (Cajun seasoning dumped on butter garlic wings)). The bleu cheese dressing is good and chunky. The only complaint I have is that they should toss the wings in the sauce, not just drizzle it on top. Some wings are swimming, while others are naked. The combo sauces should be mixed, not just seasoning or parmesan cheese dumped on top of the sauced wings. But overall, wings were cooked just right, were a good size, and fresh. The beer selection is also quite good.

Good food, excellent beer selection, friendly helpful service. The bar is loud but it is one of our favorite places because the atmosphere is lively and upbeat. We have never had bad service and the staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about what the sell.

We were happily greeted at the door and taken rite to our table that we reserved. The drink selection was OK but the food was fabulous. Everything was as described and better. Try the fo mondu wings for starter but be warned, don't get turned off by the pouring of sauce over the wings instead of the usual sauce that the wings are dipped totally in. The dinners were much more then we expected and that rating is also for the desserts. YUMMY! But I do think the dessert menu does have room for expansion Lastly, look your car doors in the parking lot because just take a real look at the homes in that neighborhood. The hood.

My friends and I arrived at 7 pm on a Friday with reservations. We were quickly seated in the room off the bar. Although it was very cold outside; the room was toasty. Too toasty...as were seated up against the windows next to the wall heaters. We moved over and enjoyed our salads. The group (6 of us...) ordered nachos as an appetizer. It was bland and lacked anything appealing to the eye. The plate was scorching. So that's a plus, I suppose. I ordered the boneless wings with the "ouch" sauce. I was warned away from the seasoning. (Very off putting...but I appreciated the sentiment...) I went with it anyway. They were tasty. The chicken pot pie was soup with crust on it. The haddock was over cooked. The waitress was ok, they were out of cake for desserts. Getting refills and clearing plates was difficult. They were not at all crazy busy. Probably won't return, but usually like to give places a second try. So we'll see.

The first time it was Excellent!! We had wings, chicken noodle soup, a pot pie and the pittsburger. All were perfect!!! The second time was good. We had the Italian wedding soup (perfect!!) wings, the three little pigs Mac and cheese ( ham, bacon, & pork) and polish burger.

Holy moly this place is good! The outside doesn't look like much, but don't let that make you skip the restaurant. However, we skipped the chicken wings (which sounds like we made a mistake). The burghers and beer were spot on. Huge portions of perfectly cooked food. There were some menu options I've never heard of: meatloaf stuffed chicken, for example. Be adventurous! Try the sampler of beer, order something you've never had.

If you like Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on Food Network, this is the place for you. Don't let the outside fool you, they take bar food and kick it up quite a bit. Hidden gem.

Lots of different beer on tap. They have a cool eclectic menu...food can be a little bland at times though. Awesome Tuna steak salad, but no Asian-inspired dressing for it! Ended up with balsamic, yuck...

Really great food, and yes - the wings. They are HUGE. You can also get six and six with different sauces, so if you're like me and want to try more than one, you'll dig. The hot wasn't very hot, but the cajun was excellent. I'm definitely going to try the "ouch" next time I visit. Service was perfect and pleasant. A few things keep me from the full five star review: 1. I love me some saucy wings. I want to get DIRTY when I eat them. THIS IS AMERICA. Unfortunately, the wing sauce was merely drizzled and not drenching. 2. There are a ton of sauces from which to choose, but it is impossible for me to guess what a "Cactus" sauce or a "Cowboy" sauce entails flavor-wise. Could we get a bit of description on the menu or can our servers give us a little cheat sheet if we ask them for more info? Everything else was stellar, though, and I'll definitely be back to try some of the more mysterious sauces. I'm kind of afraid to ask what "Red Rocket" is, though... Edit: Since this review, I've been to Anthracite a few more times. Service is always so amazing, even when they are packed. Make sure to go for wing night (thursdays)... you can get a doz for 6 bucks! I tried the "Ouch" during my visit last night and it was all heat and no flavor. A fun challenge, but you may want to stick to the "hot" unless you're the type of person who likes the atomic wings at Quaker Steak (these might have been hotter, honestly). One other thing... the pot pie, while HUGE, has a pizza-style crust instead of a pie crust. Wasn't a fan. But the wings are great, and the service is perfect.

This is a pretty highly rated spot so I stopped in never having been in Wilkes Barre before. I sat at the bar and had great friendly service. They were having a "2 for $25" dinner and those choices looked like good traditional meals. It was just me so I opted for a chopped salad and some wings. I was very pleased with both and they had s very extensive list of sauce/rub choices for the wings. I'd recommend for anyone.

  • Russell H.

This place is awesome, had some of the best and most unique food combos and options. I can say that the Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese is amazing and the wings are delicious. A number of sauce combos and daily specials too. Good selection of beers although some can be pricey, still a great local place. Service is usually great as well, sometimes there can be a wait because the size of the dining room is small.

Busy tonight because Thursday is wing night. Service was very good. Lauren (?) was cheerful, knowledgeable about the menu and served us well. We had wings, chop salad and a steak at our table. Everything looked tasty and was very good. It is no wonder they are busy.

Heard great things about this place so was excited to try. My sisters and I ordered a little bit of everything. We started with the crab and shrimp cocktail and the mixed appetizer platter. For entree's my younger sister got the mac and cheese burger, my older sister got the crab cakes and I got the hunters surf and turf special, which was rainbow trout and venison. I also ordered the most excellent beer flight which consisted of 2 ipas, cranberry ale, raspberry porter and a stout. First thing I should mention is that service was phenomenal. We went on a Friday night and were seated right away by a very friendly hostess. Our server was very knowledgeable and polite. I would return just for this reason. The stand out items were the chicken wings (might be the best I've had), the burger, and the shrimp cocktail. All of these were EXCELLENT. As far as criticisms, the dinner items were just okay. Crab cake's are hard to pull off and theirs didn't hit the mark for me. Too much filler and were on the dry side...would fall apart when we put our forks in them. My venison and trout were a little bland. The 'hunters gravy' which the venison was served in was lacking flavor and seasoning. I usually like a lot of wine in my cacciatore/game meat preps and this was more like a regular brown gravy. The trout was whole...skin and and head attached, which doesn't bother me or my sisters at all but might be off putting for other diners. It was at least exciting to see some game meat on the menu. I also wish that the food was a little hotter temp wise when it came out. Some of my venison was cold and the app platter was lukewarm. Overall it was a very good experience. I don't think i'll go back for dinner items, but I would definitely love to return for wings, seafood night and the beer flights.

This is the second time that I've come here and loved it both times. I got wings both times, the first time as my meal and the second as an apetizer. Not only are the wings cooked well, but they have a varied and interesting sauce menu. I got the crab macaroni. It was fantastic and a large enough portion for me to take leftovers home. My friend got the seafood pot pie and that's the only reason I'm giving a four. It was small and instead of it being a nice deep dish pot pie concoction, it was a pie of crust placed over top the shallow bowl that contained the yummy insides. He was disappointed. It tasted good, but he was hoping for more. That was the only complaint. The waitress was friendly and knowledgeable, the atmosphere pleasant, and the food good. I'll definitely go again.

It seems like a local place with hometown cooking. The food was very good. The wings were crispy and they have have a LOT of sauce options. The portions were hearty and the service was very friendly. They had a good beer selection. Don't expect much for ambiance, as it feels quite divey and looks like a rehabbed bar. It's worth visiting regardless.

Good food and beer options! However, the service was slow and wanted to push us out. The atmosphere is nice and it has a great local feel.

I went there last night as a result of these reviews and it was great. We had the 2 for $22 Tuesday special. The food was great; more than we could finish, and the service was great. Definitely worth a visit.
